Responsible Use of AI Companion Platforms
This site covers platforms designed for adults. Our content, and the platforms we review, are intended exclusively for users 18 years of age and older. This page outlines what responsible engagement with AI companion technology looks like and what resources are available when additional support is needed.
Age Restrictions: 18+ Only
Every platform reviewed on this site — including CrushOn AI, Character.AI, Janitor AI, Candy AI, SpicyChat AI, and others — requires users to be at least 18 years old. The content available on these platforms, including adult roleplay and explicit material, is inappropriate for minors.
If you are under 18, please leave this site and these platforms.
For parents: most platforms use self-reported age verification only. Effective parental restrictions require device-level controls and network-level filtering rather than platform-side enforcement. Router DNS filtering and device parental control settings are the practical tools.
AI Companions: What They Are (And Are Not)
AI companion platforms use large language model technology to simulate conversation. Understanding what is actually happening behind the interface supports healthy use.
AI companion responses are generated outputs — probabilistic text produced by machine learning systems trained on human-written text. When an AI character expresses concern, excitement, or affection, it is generating text that fits the context of the conversation. It does not have subjective feelings, consciousness, or genuine preferences.
This does not make the experience meaningless. Narrative and fiction have real emotional and creative value. But clarity about the nature of the technology matters for maintaining a healthy relationship with it.
AI companions are not:
- Real relationships with real people
- Mental health care or crisis support
- Confidential communication (conversations are stored server-side)
- Substitute for professional guidance of any kind
Habits That Support Healthy Engagement
Set intentional time limits. Immersive AI companion experiences can absorb time in ways that feel rewarding in the moment but accumulate at the cost of other activities. Treating AI companion use as a leisure activity with defined time boundaries — like any other entertainment — prevents it from expanding to fill available time unchecked.
Maintain real-world social connections. AI companion platforms work best as supplemental experiences, not primary social outlets. If AI interactions are increasingly substituting for human contact rather than existing alongside it, that pattern is worth examining.
Maintain perspective on the technology. The characters feel real because the technology is designed to be engaging. That design success does not mean the experience is real in the way human relationships are real. Holding that distinction consciously supports healthy use.
Protect your privacy. Conversations on AI companion platforms are stored on company servers. Do not share personally identifying information — name, address, workplace, financial details — in conversations. Use a secondary email for platform registration.
Our CrushOn AI privacy review covers what specific platforms collect and how to minimize exposure.
Mental Health and Crisis Resources
AI companion platforms are entertainment products. They are not appropriate support for mental health crises, suicidal ideation, or acute distress. If you are in crisis or experiencing emotional distress that goes beyond what entertainment can address, qualified professional resources are available.

Privacy Protection Practices
Best practices for minimizing privacy exposure when using AI companion platforms:
- Register with a secondary or dedicated email address — not your primary personal or work email
- Do not share your full name, home address, or financial information in conversations
- Review the privacy policy before subscribing — understand what data is being collected
- Be aware that conversations are stored server-side on most platforms
- Consider using a VPN for additional network-level privacy if that matters to your threat model
The Mozilla Foundation's Privacy Not Included project provides independent privacy assessments for consumer apps. CrushOn AI received a "Warning" label — see our safety analysis for what this means in practice.
